The Faculty of Natural Sciences is one of the important faculties responsible for research in natural sciences and technology (Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics and Statistics, Computer Science) and other related applied sciences at the National University of Laos. The Faculty of Natural Sciences primarily focuses on applied research to support national development priorities.

Core Research Areas in the Faculty of Natural Sciences
1. Biology and Biotechnology
Research in biology and biotechnology is one of the strongest areas of the faculty, which includes:
-
Biodiversity surveys and wildlife conservation;
-
Studies on plant communities, plant diversity, ethnobotany, aquatic plants, peatland plants, plant ecology, and economic plants;
-
Studies on the diversity of amphibians, reptiles, mammals, fish, snails, aquatic insects, spiders, entomopathogenic fungi, and plankton;
-
Isolation and identification of: acetic acid bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, Bacillus bacteria, ethanol-fermenting yeasts, and xylose-utilizing yeasts for ethanol fermentation;
-
Fermentation: bioethanol for renewable energy from hydrolyzed cassava starch, and traditional rice wine (Sato) from natural starter cultures;
-
Testing starch digestion using the fungus Aspergillus oryzae for rice wine fermentation, and testing fruit wine fermentation from various types of fruits using Saccharomyces cerevisiae – M19 yeast isolated in the Lao PDR.
The faculty has collaborated with various ministries, domestic organizations, and international conservation organizations. Past collaborations include the Center of Excellence in Biodiversity and external conservation partners working on conservation, biodiversity research, and various development projects. In the field of biological research, there are faculty members who are international experts, as listed below.

2. Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry
Research in chemistry and environmental chemistry mostly includes:

Monitoring and analyzing environmental quality (water, soil, air) and treatment techniques;

Analysis of harmful elements and heavy metals;

Analysis of pesticide residues;
-
Natural product chemistry (extraction, phytochemical analysis, bioactivity evaluation);

Formulation and analysis of detergent products (soap and others);
-
Development of chemical analysis instruments;

Evaluation of hydrogen energy potential.
Many projects are linked to environmental monitoring in the Mekong sub-region and pollution assessment in urban and rural areas.




3. Physics and Applied Physics
Research in physics includes:

Environmental radioactivity measurement and nuclear radiation safety in soil, water, air, plants, and food;

In the field of mathematics and statistics, there are various research areas such as:

5. Computer Science
Research in computer science focuses mainly on computer software, information technology, and communication (ICT), emphasizing application and development. The main research areas include: Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), computer software, computer network systems, digital education, and information systems. Current research activities generally involve:
